TROY, Ala. (TROJANVISION) — Amid the search for Nancy Guthrie, campus police at Troy University are reminding students that everyday habits can make a difference in staying safe.
According to Troy University’s 2025 safety report, officers responded to reports of motor vehicle theft, burglary, and robbery between 2022 and 2024. While no home invasions or kidnappings were reported during that time, police say preventative measures are still essential.
Troy University Police Department (TUPD) Sergeant Rachel Farmer students should avoid leaving spare keys in predictable places.
“If you have a relative here, give them one of your spare keys,” Farmer said. “If you have a very close, trusted friend, let them have one of your spare keys.
“That way you’re not leaving a spare key under a doormat where everybody’s gonna look.”
Farmer also emphasized that politeness can sometimes create unintended security risks, particularly in residence halls.
“Don’t hold the door open for the person behind you,” Farmer said. “Close it.
“Let them use their own key fob to get into that dormitory.”

Campus police say staying safe goes beyond locking doors. Officers urge students to remain alert while walking across campus or downtown, especially when using their phones.
Police also encourage students to make sure someone always knows their location, particularly when walking alone at night. Letting a friend or family member know where you are can be a critical safety step.
