TUPD and Trojan Outreach team up to prevent drunk driving

TROY, Ala. (TROJANVISION) — The Troy University Police Department (TUPD) and Trojan Outreach are teaming up to dissuade students from driving drunk.

Officers and peer educators banded their resources to hold a DUI Simulation. Organizers talked to students in order to promote safe driving via resource tables, a golf cart simulation and safe driving pledges.

“The importance of this event is to get students on campus to come and they get to simulate drunk driving,” said Dessy Pollard, Trojan Outreach peer educator. “We’re with the Troy University Police Department today so we have different kind of goggles were they try them on and these different levels of being under the influence so they just try to maneuver their way through the cones and we’re just trying to educate them on not drinking and driving.”

Students had the chance to experience firsthand how impaired driving can affect them.

I think a danger they think is that they are fine to do it which you’re obviously not when you’re drinking and driving because not only are you putting yourself in harms way but you’re hurting other people that are just in the way and driving,” Pollard said.

Trojan Outreach and TUPD hope students take the lessons learned beyond this event, and  prioritize safety on the road.

“I hope from this event they will understand the safety when we tell them not to drink and drive because we don’t want them to harm themselves or others,” Pollard said.
