Georgia Southern wins series against Troy

TROY, Ala. (TROJANVISION) — This past weekend, the Troy softball team played the Georgia Southern Eagles in a three-game home series.

After winning 2-0 on Friday, the Trojans lost 6-1 on Saturday and 8-4 on Sunday.

“Disappointing day for sure,” said head coach Eric Newell. “A couple of mental mistakes defensively, a lot of pass ball, wild pitches, let the ball get to the backstop a little too much. We didn’t pitch it poorly, but we weren’t sharp either. My hat is off to Georgia Southern.

“There is a reason they are at the top of the conference. Their pitching is really good. I thought offensively, although it may have seemed that we struggled, I thought we put up a good fight with Georgia Southern with a great pitching staff.”

Annie Orman and Taylor McKinney both homered on Sunday; however, their efforts were not enough to lift the Trojans to victory in the rubber match.

“We don’t want to lose that power,” Newell said. “We want to keep that homerun threat, but we want to pass the bat a little bit more, get a few more baserunners, take some early leads and see if we can swipe some bags as well.”

Troy needs a quick turnaround as it will go to Birmingham to face UAB on Tuesday.

“Busy week for sure,” Newell told TrojanVision. “Monday is going to be about prep for UAB and then play some softball. At that point, playing games is kind of your prep work. We’ll look to play solid against UAB to prep for Texas State.”

The Trojans’ matchup against UAB starts a seven-game road trip as they look to finish the season strong.

The Trojans will take on the Blazers on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
