TROY, Ala. (TROJANVISION) — Troy football defeated South Alabama in the Battle for the Belt, 31-24.
In front of over 28,000 fans, the Trojans took down the Jaguars in overtime and reclaimed the belt lost last year. The game is Troy’s first overtime win since 2013 and the first Battle for the Belt win for head coach Gerad Parker.
“I don’t know if I’ve had time to filter all this out yet,” said Parker. “I am so happy for our players and our staff, an unbelievable effort by everyone. Our fans, that stadium, just the energy of the Vet, that’s what the Troy-South Alabama matchup looks like.”
The Trojans dominated the passing game, having almost 100 more passing yards than the Jaguars. Troy quarterback Tucker Kilcrease also led both teams in rushing yards with 102.
“I can’t run the ball if I don’t have the guys up front blocking for me,” said Kilcrease about his rushing performance. “It’s all credit to them, and taking a step every single day at getting better.”

Another player who had an impressive game was defensive spear Devin Lafayette, who more than doubled his previous season high in tackles with 19. The defense would combine for 84 tackles, something Lafayette attributed to the chemistry among the team.
“Last year, I used to come home after games and be by myself, come home after practices and be by myself” said Lafayette. “This year, I’m with a teammate every day after practice, every day after games. Our bond and connection is growing stronger and stronger as we keep going throughout the season.”
Next up for the Trojans is Texas State, in what could be the final matchup between the two school as Sun Belt teams.
