Troy Public Radio and The Tropolitan writers team up for Above the Fold podcast

TROY, Ala. (TROJANVISION) — Troy Public Radio (TPR) listeners are now able to get the latest news from student newspaper The Tropolitan without every having to visit a newspaper stand.

Recently, TPR debuted its new podcast, Above the Fold. Radio host Joey Hudson is the producer of the podcast and the man behind the original idea.

“I wanted to take the hard work that students are already doing with the newspaper, they do excellent work as well, and I wanted to see if we could translate that with minimal effort on the part of the students, given busy schedules, and put something together that they can put in their portfolios and help them get jobs.”

The Tropolitan Faculty Advisor Hanna Cooper said the podcast is also an opportunity for student journalists to expand their skillsets.

“Part of working in journalism no matter if it’s print, TV, or audio, you have to be able do a little bit of everything,” Cooper said. It’s been fun to watch my students develop skills outside the print landscape.”

Above the Fold is just one of many student podcasts that Troy Public Radio has to offer.

“This semester alone, we’ve had more student podcasts and production than I think we’ve ever had,” Hudson told TrojanVision. “We have Making Waves and The Talk of Troy. it’s just been very liberating and giving these students that are so capable of more avenues to pursue fulfilling work and add to their portfolios again.

Currently, episodes of Above the Fold are released monthly but could start to be released twice a month.
