School of Music selects inaugural Chili Champion

TROY, Ala. (TROJANVISION) — The John M. Long School of Music has selected its first-ever Chili Champion.

Last Wednesday, the School of Music hosted its inaugural Chili Cook-off in Long Hall.

The event consisted of four new band teachers duking it out for the best chili. Even though these four musicians have played for years, there was no playing around when it came to the musical fruit.

“The new music faculty is very competitive with each other,” said Assistant Director of Bands Jarianne Larson. “There’s four of us so we all came in and were like, ‘You know what? We want to do something fun here.’ So there has been mad dissing of each other recently revolving around this chili competition.”

The event gave everyone a chance to see the new directors and is the start of something special for the band community.

“Chandler and I were just talking in his office about [how] to build culture here in the School of Music,” said Assistant Professor of Music Dr. Kelly Langenberg. “We both really like chili, and we like cooking, so we just wanted to have an event that served our community here in the School of Music.

Students from across campus enjoyed the contestants’ chili and were able to pick who they thought was the chili master.

“I think it’s great for all of the students to come together,” student Olivia Perault said. “I think it’s really cool for all of the new faculty to bond.”

In the end there could be only one chili champion. That honor went to Michael Mills, an assistant professor of music/choral music education.
