Men’s Basketball beats ULM to become regular season champions

TROY, Ala. (TROJANVISION) — Troy Men’s Basketball beat ULM and earned its second regular season championship title in a row, becoming undisputed champions for the next Sun Belt tournament in Pensacola.

The Trojans and the Warhawks went back and forth until Troy grabbed the lead and held it into the end of the first half, 29 to 37. The first few minutes of the second half were a particularly stressful time for the Trojans when ULM continually lessened the score difference between the two teams.

“There was no intensity that second four minutes, they scored what seemed like every possession, then we put that next group in,” Head Men’s Basketball Coach Scott Cross said. “That group kind of gave us a little bit of a lift, and from that point forward, I felt like our guys played hard and we got stops. “

After a dunk and a three-point shot from Jerrell Bellamy, the Trojans gained momentum and eventually rounded out the game with a sizable lead at 80 to 65.

During the game, Thomas Dowd earned his 16th Double Double of the season with 22 points and 11 rebounds. Bellamy, Cooper Campbell and Victor Valdes all also had over ten points.

Campbell and Dowd explain what the team can focus on going into the tournament in Pensacola.

“Our focus and energy is the biggest thing and connectiveness with our team,” Campbell explained. “When we play connected and together, I don’t think there’s a team in the sun belt that can beat us.”

“This upcoming week before we play, just trusting in what we can do day in and day out and that if we play for high stability, no matter who we play we are good enough to win,” Dowd said.

The win for Troy made this championship win a night to remember.
