Sound of the South holds Drumline Interest Day

TROY, Ala. (TROJANVISION) — Whether you play snare, tenor, bass drum or even cymbals, the drumline says there is a place for you in the Sound of the South (SOTS).

Saturday morning, prospective members were given an opportunity to learn some of the SOTS music and get a head start on upcoming band camps throughout the summer.

“For June Camp, we have essentially two and a half days to put our entire show on the drums,” says Robert Clayson, Marching Drumline Instructor. “We have to learn about eight minutes of music in 48 hours, a warmup packet and a cadence so whenever I don’t have to do introductions to playing techniques during June Camp it always makes it much, much easier.”

Returning members and instructors were the ones teaching potential members. Current Senior and future Graduate Assistant for the band Will Heeres talked about his experience teaching.

“Just getting into the nitty gritty of here’s where you came from, here’s how we can improve on that,” said Heeres. “Getting everyone together, seeing the melting pot that is the Troy band and starting the process to getting it all the same.”

Their biggest advice to prospective students? Don’t be afraid to learn fast.

“We don’t have the time most days to spend an hour and a half on one thing,” said Clayson. “We have in any given rehearsal day 50 different things that we have to do and we only have about an hour to do it.”
