The Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education at Troy University equips students with essential teaching skills for grades K-6. This nationally accredited program integrates classroom experience, professional trainings, and expert faculty instruction to prepare future educators for success.
Dr. Joseph Johnson, Department Chair for Teacher Education, emphasizes the program’s strong reputation:
“Graduates from our Elementary Education program are in high demand not just because of the teacher shortage, but because TROY maintains an excellent reputation for teacher preparation around the state and Southeast,” he said. “When superintendents from Birmingham, Huntsville, Mobile, and other parts of the state call and inquire about our graduates, it is a great piece of evidence that our program remains in high regard. Our teacher education faculty take this reputation seriously and work hard to instill in our students that they are continuing in the path of a long line of successful educators from TROY.”
Founded in 1887 as a teacher’s college, Troy University has built a strong reputation for excellence in teacher preparation. The Elementary Education program is consistently ranked among the top regional universities in the South, providing students with modern instructional strategies and technology integration.
A key component of the program is its emphasis on real-world experience. Students spend two semesters before internship in elementary school classrooms, working alongside mentor teachers. The field-based portion of the curriculum includes a literacy practicum, a math/science/STEM practicum, and an internship, which is the final step before graduation. Additionally, the Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STREAM) Lab offers hands-on learning opportunities and professional development.
Graduates from the program receive multiple significant trainings. These include trainings in the Alabama Math, Science, and Technology Initiative (AMSTI), the Alabama Reading Initiative (ARI), Dyslexia Simulation Training, and Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS). The program’s success is evident in its 100% job placement rate, with the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projecting 120,300 annual job openings for elementary teachers through 2031.
Troy University’s commitment to excellence ensures that graduates are well-prepared for the classroom, continuing a legacy of outstanding educators who make a difference in students’ lives.
