Troy University recently hosted its first-ever residency for group counseling graduate students, marking an important milestone for the university’s online counseling program. The residency, which took place from March 7-9 during Term 3 of this year, brought together approximately 115 students from across the country for an in-person experience focused on the group counseling process.

The residency was held at Troy University’s Dothan Campus and offered students a unique opportunity to engage in practical learning experiences. This included community clinicians who demonstrated group processes, allowing students to interact with professionals who may serve as potential supervisors during their internships and practicums. This is a significant aspect of the residency, as it helps students establish connections with clinicians and agencies for their future practical experiences.

Dr. Bogusia Skudrzyk, Associate Professor and Coordinator of Clinical Trainings at Troy University, highlighted the importance of this event. “For many students, this was their first opportunity to meet their professors and peers in person,” she said. “We are a fully online program, so having the chance to connect face-to-face is incredibly meaningful. It also gives students the courage to reach out more frequently, knowing that we are approachable and here to support them in their learning journey.”

The event lasted three days, from Friday through Sunday, and provided students with dedicated time to practice group counseling techniques and understand the importance of structuring groups, maintaining confidentiality, and developing counseling skills. Students were responsible for selecting group topics, with faculty guidance, and leading these groups throughout the weekend.

“We also had the community leaders involved, who were able to participate with students in group exercises. The students had the opportunity to lead discussions and practice their skills in real-time,” Dr. Skudrzyk explained. “This hands-on experience is invaluable, as it allows students to see the practical application of what they’ve learned.”

Dr. Sherrionda H. Crawford, Associate Professor of School and Clinical Mental Health Counseling, emphasized the impact of such events on students’ professional development: “Residencies like this are a cornerstone of the program, providing students with the chance to refine their skills and connect with the larger counseling community. It also helps bridge the gap between theory and practice, allowing our students to develop a deeper understanding of group counseling in action.”

The residency was not just about the group counseling process—it also created opportunities for students to connect with their professors outside of the online classroom environment. The event fostered a sense of community, helping students to feel more comfortable and confident in reaching out for additional support throughout their program.

As Dr. Skudrzyk noted, “This residency is one of two that our students will complete, with the next residency taking place in Term 1(T1) of their second year. This structure allows students to continuously build on their skills, making sure they are fully prepared for real-world counseling situations.”

In addition to the inaugural residency, upcoming residencies for the program include:

  • PSY 6645 – Evaluation and Assessment of the Individual: Scheduled for Week 6 of T1 (September 19-21, 2025)
  • CP 6642 – Group Dynamics and Counseling: Scheduled for Week 8 of T1 (October 3-5, 2025)

These residencies will further enhance students’ practical learning experiences and help them develop the critical skills needed in their counseling careers.

This inaugural residency is just the beginning of what promises to be a valuable and enriching experience for students in Troy University’s online counseling program, providing them with the skills, support, and connections they need to succeed in their future careers.
