On Saturday, March 29, Troy University’s John M. Long School of Music hosted the 18th annual Clarinet Day.

Fifty participants, including TROY students and high school students from Alabama, Georgia and Florida, came together on TROY’s campus for the day-long event to learn from world-renowned guest artists and clinicians.

“Clarinet Day is always one of my favorite days of the year and this edition was no exception,” said Dr. Timothy Phillips, Professor of Clarinet and event organizer. “I always get new ideas and a refreshed perspective from Clarinet Day and, as always, I’m really looking forward to next year.”

The event featured multiple recitals, clarinet choir rehearsals and clinics from the guest artists, including clarinet repair technician Wojtek Komsta, British clarinet soloist Anna Hashimoto, New Orleans clarinetist Gregory Agid and clarinetists Joshua Mietz and Colby Spengler.

“Anna’s advice during her masterclass was both practical and artistic, and she really helped to bring the best out of our students,” Dr. Phillips said. “Gregory Agid’s class was eye-opening because he talked about his career as a musician in New Orleans, what it’s like to tour with Michael Bublé, and gave students excellent advice about how to practice and think about music.”

Other highlights included Hashimoto’s recital with faculty pianist, Dr. Benjamin Crook and Gregory Agid’s jazz recital with Alabama pianist, Earnest Echols. The day ended with a grand finale concert for parents and guests.

The event was sponsored by The College of Communication and Fine Arts, Buffet Crampon, Vandoren, BG France, D’Addario, Clarinets by Copeland and the World Klarinet Alliance.
