In honor of Teacher Appreciation Month, Troy University recognizes the impact of alumnus Deven Reese, whose journey from aspiring engineer to award-winning fifth-grade teacher reflects a deep commitment to student success, instructional innovation and service both in and beyond the classroom.

Deven Reese, who graduated with a Bachelors in Elementary Education from TROY, currently serves as a fifth-grade math and science teacher at Pike County Elementary School in Brundidge, Alabama. In addition to his classroom responsibilities, he contributes to his school community as a certified school bus driver and an after-school sewing instructor, expanding his impact well beyond the traditional school day.

Originally considering a career in engineering, Reese shifted his focus after recognizing the importance of student mindset and access to encouragement. Motivated by a desire to show students what is possible regardless of circumstance, he chose education as his calling and has since dedicated himself to building confidence and academic growth in his classroom.

“I have worked in education since I was 17, starting as a high school aide,” said by Deven Reese. “When I came to Troy, I worked in an after-school program at Troy Elementary and later as a substitute teacher. I have now been teaching fifth grade for four years at Pike County Elementary.”

Following his graduation from Troy University, Reese continued to advance his professional preparation by pursuing a master’s degree in Instructional Technology at the University of Alabama. He also plans to pursue a doctoral degree in education with an emphasis on instructional technology or leadership, along with completing National Board Certification as a Middle Generalist.

In his current role, Reese has also developed an after-school sewing club where students begin with foundational projects such as quilt blocks and progress toward more advanced garment construction. Through this program, he encourages creativity, patience, and practical skill-building while fostering a supportive learning environment.

In January, Reese was named both Pike County School District Teacher of the Year and District Elementary Teacher of the Year by the Pike County Board of Education, recognizing his excellence in instruction, leadership, and commitment to student success across the district.

As Teacher Appreciation Month continues, Troy University recognizes the lasting impact of alumni like Deven Reese, whose dedication in the classroom, on the bus, and in extracurricular programs reflects the powerful role educators play in shaping future generations.
