Troy University alumnus and President and CEO of 1 Sync Technologies Eric Sloan has been appointed to the Board of Directors of the Troy University Alumni Association.

Sloan is a two-time TROY graduate, earning his bachelor’s degree in computer science in 2000 and his Master of Business Administration in 2005.

Sloan called the appointment a tremendous honor.

“TROY has played a significant role in shaping both my personal and professional life,” he said. “Being selected to be on the Alumni Board is an honor but also is an opportunity to give back to an institution that invested in me and my future.”

For Sloan, TROY has always represented opportunity. In the late 1990s, he distinguished himself as a formidable All-American defensive player for the then-Troy State Trojans, consistently challenging opposing quarterbacks and wide receivers.

Initially joining TROY as a walk-on for Coach John Mayotte’s baseball team, his passion soon shifted to football, where he excelled under Coach Larry Blakeney. During his collegiate career, Sloan earned All-American honors in 1998 and 1999 and was named to the Southland Conference All-Decade Team. He also contributed to the Trojan track team, helping secure three consecutive TAAC Conference championships under Coach Bob Lambert.

“TROY is where I learned that success isn’t just determined by where you start but rather your willingness to work, learn and serve,” he said. “In that process, I was able to build relationships, get a good education and develop friendships and influences beyond my time there.”

After graduating in 2000 with a degree in Computer Science, Sloan played a year with the NFL’s San Diego Chargers and later in the XFL with the Birmingham Thunderbolts, where he was notable for his defensive prowess, intercepting four passes and scoring two touchdowns.

Sloan continued his education at TROY, earning an MBA in 2005, which paved the way for his successful career in information technology.

He credits instructors such as Sebrena Moten, Dr. Jean Laliberte, Dr. Cynthia Carnley and Dr. Tish Matuszek for being key to his academic success and preparing him for his career both in his undergraduate and graduate studies.

“I look at TROY not only as being an institution; it became family,” he said. “In the process of becoming family, it allows you to build a legacy as well.”

Sloan hopes he is able to help the Alumni Board continue to build relationships in an effort to help current TROY students.

“Nobody achieves anything alone. For the Alumni Board, I look at this as an opportunity not only to foster relationships on the board but also to foster relationships between the board and students,” he said. “Members of the Alumni Board are or have been successful in their careers, and sometimes you need those advisors and mentors outside of the classroom. I see it as an opportunity to help students see a clear path from the classroom into successful careers.” 

Beyond his professional endeavors, Sloan serves as the Director of the Education Foundation of AFCEA International’s Montgomery Chapter, where he has been instrumental in awarding over $1 million in scholarships to students in STEM fields. He holds several IT certifications and is an active member of the board of directors for various organizations, including the Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce and River Region Trails. Sloan is also a proud member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.

Sloan and his wife, Nicole, are both alumni of Troy University. They are proud parents to their two sons, Courtland and Jayden.

Jack Weaver, President of the Alumni Association’s Board of Directors, said he was pleased to welcome Sloan as a board member.

“I am extremely excited to have Eric as a member of our board,” Weaver said. “He was a two-sport athlete at TROY and he loves Troy University. He is a successful business professional, and I believe he will bring a lot of excitement and vitality to our board. I look forward to working with him.”
