Gerry Brooks (Class of 1988) has built a career rooted in education, leadership and encouragement. After earning his degree in Elementary Education from Troy University, Brooks spent more than two decades serving students and teachers as an educator and administrator before stepping into his current role as a motivational speaker and social media influencer.

Brooks’ journey to TROY began with the George C. Wallace Scholarship. Coming from Florida, he knew that without this support his dream of attending TROY would have been out of reach. Once on campus, he immersed himself in student life, joining Sigma Chi fraternity, working as a lifeguard and eventually leading the Natatorium program under the mentorship of Dr. Don Jeffrey, who was the Director of Aquatics. Those early responsibilities taught him the importance of leadership, accountability and working with peers.

Brooks also explored new passions at TROY, including theater under the direction of Dr. David Dye who later became a Professor Emeritus of Communication. Though he originally joined at the encouragement of a friend, the experience of performing and working backstage gave him confidence on stage. He recalls volunteering behind the scenes at the Miss TROY pageant as one of his favorite campus memories.

What stood out most during his years at TROY was the balance of community and opportunity. “It was small enough that you felt like you knew everyone but large enough that you could disappear if you wanted to,” Brooks said. The friendships he formed on campus remain a central part of his life, with many TROY connections still influencing his personal and professional circles.

After graduation, Brooks entered the classroom where he served 12 years as an elementary school teacher, then transitioned into administration for 14 years, 13 of which were spent as a principal. His experiences in leadership, combined with his background in public speaking and performance, opened the door to a new platform.

Six years ago, Brooks posted his first video online. What began as a simple effort grew into a following of more than 5 million across social media platforms. Today, he travels the country as a motivational speaker, using humor and encouragement to inspire educators at conferences and school district events.

Despite his success, Brooks continues to honor his TROY roots. He frequently returns for homecomings and alumni gatherings and proudly represents the University in his work. He also serves as a board member for SHORT the Squirrel, a literacy initiative supporting the children of Alabama. In recognition of his national influence as an educator, speaker, and author, as well as his dedication to the Trojan community, he was named one of four recipients of TROY’s Alumni of the Year award in 2022, one of the University’s highest honors.

Brooks credits the Department of Teacher Education with shaping his career and character. Through supportive mentors, lasting friendships and the confidence gained on stage and in leadership, his time at TROY prepared him not just for a career in education but for a lifelong mission of motivating others.
