Dr. Paige Paquette, Professor in the Teacher Education Program with the College of Education and Behavioral Sciences at Troy University, has been honored with Troy University’s Book Token Award.

Presented during a ceremony on Tuesday at the Troy Campus Library, the award recognizes faculty who provide service to and support of Troy University Libraries. The award has been presented periodically since the late 1980s but was reinstated as an annual award in 2014.

“I met Dr. Paquette at least 15 years ago and she’s been passionate about libraries ever since,” said Dr. Chris Shaffer, Dean of Troy University Libraries. “We have worked together to get books to disadvantaged children in Phenix City and to senior citizens in Hurtsboro. She also established a little free library on the Phenix City campus. I was thrilled to honor her today.”

Dr. Paquette earned her bachelor’s degree in English and her master’s degree in English education from the University of Alabama. She received her Ph.D. in English language arts from Auburn University. Before entering higher education, Dr. Paquette taught English language arts at Central High School in Phenix City for almost seven years.

Her work includes fostering global and community engagement through study abroad programs and collaborative research. She co-leads a study abroad initiative in Costa Rica involving Troy University students, local educators and young leaders through a partnership between the East Alabama Chamber of Commerce and the University.

“This is a real honor, especially for those of us at other campuses,” Dr. Paquette said. “Sometimes when we’re not on the Troy Campus, we wonder if our work is recognized. Today I felt seen and appreciated, which reinforces that what we do is worthwhile.”

Dr. Paquette’s passion for reading began early in life.

“I love books and I love helping others fall in love with reading,” Dr. Paquette said. “When you read, you can travel anywhere and experience different places. I think it’s important that we encourage people to read and use their imaginations, especially in today’s world with so many distractions.”

Dr. Paquette noted that she teaches many students who are already working teachers with limited time to search for academic resources. She emphasized the value of having librarian Lisa Vardaman embedded in her courses to assist students with their research needs.

Through her tireless advocacy for literacy and her collaborative spirit, Dr. Paquette exemplifies the kind of partnership between faculty and libraries that strengthens the entire Troy University community. Her work continues to open doors to reading and learning for students, children and community members across the Wiregrass region.
