Troy University recently welcomed Alabama Congressman Shomari Figures to the Troy Campus to meet with students, faculty and University leadership and tour key academic and research facilities.

While Congressman Figures has interacted with Troy University on numerous occasions—both in Washington, D.C., and throughout the district—this marked his first official campus visit since taking office in Jan. 2025.

“I’m glad I had the opportunity to spend time at TROY and learn more about the incredible work by the students and faculty,” Congressman Figures said. “TROY continues to be a leader in the region, and I’m proud to support this amazing institution.”

During his visit, he toured the different lab spaces in Jones Hall and met with students in the College of Health Sciences. At the Center for Materials and Manufacturing Sciences, he engaged with engineering students and faculty about the Center’s technology, applied research efforts and industry partnerships.

Congressman Figures represents both TROY’s main campus in Pike County and the Montgomery Campus. William Filmore, Vice Chancellor of Government and External Relations at Troy University, said it was important to show him all TROY has to offer.

“He has been a strong supporter of this region of the state,” Filmore said. “It was important to provide him with the opportunity to see firsthand the accomplishments of our faculty and staff, to showcase our facilities and to engage directly with our outstanding students.”

In addition to touring campus facilities, University leadership and Congressman Figures discussed current legislative issues being considered in Congress that could have potential implications for higher education and Troy University.

“It was a highly productive visit, and we look forward to continuing a strong and collaborative working relationship with Congressman Figures and his staff,” Filmore said. “He has always been gracious, engaged and genuinely interested in what we’re doing and how he can help. That level of support means a great deal to our students, faculty and the communities we serve.”

The Figures family has a long history of public service and engagement with the University. His father, the late Michael Figures, served as a state senator, and his mother, Vivian Figures, currently serves in the Alabama State Senate.

“We’re proud to have worked with multiple generations of the Figures family,” Filmore said. “Their legacy of public service and continued connection to Troy University is deeply valued.”
