Troy University’s John M. Long School of Music hosted the 24th annual Southeastern United States (SEUS) Middle School Honor Band and Clinic on Nov. 20 and 21. Over 250 students from 50 schools in Alabama, Florida and Georgia participated in this year’s event, along with their band directors and parents, who also visited the campus.

According to Dr. Mark Walker, Director of Bands, the event serves a dual purpose: challenging students musically while also introducing prospective Trojans to the university.

“This event is an opportunity not only for Middle School students to participate in a fall semester honor band that will challenge their skills and introduce them to new musical concepts and technique that they can bring back to their home school, but also they meet new people and make friends,” said Dr. Walker. “Additionally, it is an opportunity for us to introduce or re-introduce ourselves to new students who will one day join us as fellow Trojans.”

Ansley Cullers, a student from Southside Middle School in Tallassee, Alabama, was excited to return to the event this year.

“My favorite thing about SEUS is that I get to meet new people,” she said. “My favorite thing about coming back is being able to recreate memories from last year.”

At the end of SEUS, students performed in a concert at Claudia Crosby Theater, followed by a performance from the Troy University Symphony Band.
