Troy University’s Department of Theatre and Dance production of William Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night” has been invited to perform at the American College Theater Festival Regional Festival in Montgomery. The event will take place at the Alabama Shakespeare from Feb. 3-7.
The annual festival highlights selective, peer-reviewed excellence in all areas of theatre. Full productions are a highly esteemed component of the event, as only a select few are chosen each year.
Alex Piper, “Twelfth Night’s” Director and Lecturer of Theatre Performance, emphasized the significance of this achievement for the department.
“Being selected for such a prestigious honor is a testament to the dedication and excellence that our faculty and students exhibit daily within their craft,” he said. “I am extremely proud of the artistry, commitment, and intentionality of everyone involved in this process of bringing Twelfth Night to life. This opportunity allows our department at Troy University to not only showcase our abilities on an elite level, but to also collaborate with our colleges and share stories that matter most in our national cultural conversations right now.”
“Twelfth Night” opened the Department of Theatre and Dance’s 2025-2024 season in October. Set in 1920s New Orleans, the production follows twins separated by a shipwreck. Viola disguises herself as a man serving Duke Orsino, who loves Olivia. But Olivia falls for Viola’s disguise, and Sebastian’s surprise arrival creates chaos in this tale of mistaken identity.
The American College Theatre Festival is a national theater program involving 18,000 students annually from colleges and universities across the country. For more than 50 years, the program has given more than 400,000 college theater students the opportunity to have their work critiqued, improve their dramatic skills, and receive national recognition for excellence.
