Sorrell College of Business alumnus Derek Young was recently named Global Head of Asset Management Distribution by Fidelity Investment.

As Global Head of Asset Management Distribution, he leads the European and APAC ex Japan distribution teams. Additionally, since March 2024, he is responsible for the Client Propositions team comprised of product, solutions and investment directing teams that ensure client needs globally are well connected with the full range of Fidelity’s investment capabilities. He is also a member of Fidelity International’s Global Operating Committee.

In his previous role as President Japan, Young was responsible for managing Fidelity’s Japan business covering multiple business channels; Wholesale, distributing Fidelity branded funds through financial institutions; Institutional, providing Fidelity investment solutions and services to institutional investors, asset managers and Defined Contribution pension plans; Personal Investing, which offers Fidelity and third-party mutual funds and stock trading services to retail investors.

He has experienced a broad range of roles at Fidelity Investments from 1996 to 2018. He was Vice Chairman of Fidelity Institutional Asset Management (FIAM) from 2011 to 2018, where he held several senior roles including Head of Investment Client Strategy for Asset Management, President of Fidelity’s Global Asset Allocation (GAA) division and leading the FIAM Equity group. He also served as a trustee on numerous Fidelity Boards including, Fidelity Investments Life Insurance Company Board, Fidelity’s Strategic Advisers Funds Board and FMR Investment Management (UK) Limited Board.

From 2009 to 2011, Young was chief investment officer of the Global Asset Allocation group for Fidelity Management & Research Company, maintaining oversight for strategic investment direction of asset allocation portfolios.

He joined Fidelity in 1996 as director of Risk Management for Fidelity Management Trust Company, and later served as senior vice president of Strategic Services, Strategic Investment Services and Marketing. In 2003, he was named portfolio strategist for FMR Co. and from then until 2009 became portfolio manager for several different strategies for clients in Canada, Japan, Europe and the US. He also led Fidelity’s U.S. Asset Allocation Committee and represented North America on the firm’s Global Asset Allocation Committee.

Young earned a BS degree from Troy University in 1986 and earned an MBA from Vanderbilt University in 1991 where he is Chair and a founding member of the Asia Alumni Board. He is also Vice Chair of the American Chamber of Commerce Japan Financial Services Forum. Young is a CFA® charter holder.
