Statewide Torch Run held to bring awareness to Alabama Special Olympics.

The Troy University Police Department is taking part in an event to bring awareness to the Special Olympics even though the event is not happening this year due to COVID.

The University Police along with law enforcement from across the state are taking part in the Special Olympics Torch Run. The run is an annual event that normally precedes the opening ceremony of the state games but did not take place last year due to the COVID cancellation of the games in 2020.

This year members of law enforcement are making the run as a way to bring awareness to the state Special Olympic Games which are normally held at Troy University every year.

“The Alabama Law Enforcement Torch Run is an organization that supports the Special Olympics of Alabama,” says University Police Chief and State Torch Run Director George Beaudry. “In the past years the Special Olympics State Games have been held on the Troy University campus and the torch run has always ended on campus. So this year because of COVID we’re not able to have the games, however, we’ve decided to go ahead and start back with torch run.”
