Gemma Finch prepares to compete in NCAA Track and Field Championship.

A Troy University runner is looking to bring home a national title as Gemma Finch is preparing to head to Oregon to compete in the NCAA track and field championships.

Gemma Finch punched her ticket to the championships in Eugene, Oregon after a school record-breaking run in the 800 meter.

Finch’s time of 2:02.81 seconds was nearly three seconds better than the school record of 2:05.29 seconds that Finch set earlier this year. Her time was good enough to qualify for the 12th and final qualifier from the east.

“I am so excited,” says Finch. “I know the team is as well. The support’s been amazing and to be able to go to Eugene, Oregon. There’s so much history at that track and the new stadium as well. It’s going to be a really fun trip.“

Director of Troy University Track and Field Marc Davis says Finch has shown the right qualities as an athlete in her time at TROY that put her in a position to go to Nationals.

“I think its determination,” says Davis. “I think its just a focus that very few people have when it comes to track and field. Track is a hard sport. Its year round. You have to take care of yourself, your body, diet has to be right. You have to be able to be dedicated to the craft that you have and that’s what she’s displayed.”

Finch will make her run in the NCAA Championship Thursday night. If she qualifies the finals will be on Saturday.
