TROY Women’s Basketball makes history in the WNIT

TROY, Ala. (TROJANVISION) — TROY’s women’s basketball team won its first postseason game, marking a major moment in the program’s history.

During the second round of the Women’s National Invitational Tournament (WNIT), Trojan Arena opened its doors once more as the Panthers of Florida International University (FIU) rolled into town.

The stakes were high and the environment matched. Both teams came out throwing haymakers, neither wanting to give an inch. By the end of the first half, TROY held the lead 43-34

The second half was a totally different story. The third quarter was all TROY as the team jumped to a 12-0 run to start the quarter that ended with TROY outscoring the Panthers 27-7.

The Trojans continued the offensive barrage while also suffocating the Panthers on the defensive end. A mix of shooting 38 percent from the field and a total of 20 turnovers proved too much for FIU as the Trojans pulled away and won the game 92-62.

TROJANVISION SPORTS: TROY hosts postseason basketball: the WNIT explained

Although the team’s goal was the NCAA tournament, the WNIT is a prestigious tournament to take part in.

“It was very special, I am so proud of the team,” Coach Chanda Rigby said. “They decided to do whatever it took to get this win after their hearts were so broken in the Sunbelt Tournament.”

Several Trojans put together nice nights for themselves in the second round matchup. Senior Makayia Hallmon posted double digit points, but her impact reaches further than the stat sheet shows.

“My role right now is just to try to be a leader, keep everybody together, make sure nobody falls off the short end,” Hallmon expressed.

The intensity and physicality of the game was high, but Ja’Mia Hollings, also known as “Stixx,” made sure to have fun while posting a career high 30-point double double.

“I stole Mae Mae [Makayia Hallmon] and Nia [Daniels] celebration like who’s going to guard me. It just made me feel good, having fun is the best time to be on the court,” Hollings told TrojanVision.

Throughout TROY women’s basketball history, there have been many teams to reach the postseason; none to secure a win.

March 26, 2024 will be etched into TROY history as the day the program won its first postseason game.
