TUPD talks student safety with IMPACT parents

TROY, Ala. (TROJANVISION) — During IMPACT: New Student Orientation, parents of incoming freshmen meet members of the Troy University Police Department.

Campus police recently got the opportunity to speak with parents of incoming freshmen about what they are doing to keep TROY’s campus safe, and its students, safe.

“We have courtesy escorts,” said TUPD Sgt. Rachel Farmer. “So if you’re ever out at the library late at night, you’re anywhere that you would like an escort, we can come and we’ll walk you back to where you’re going.”

Along with courtesy escorts, police can also help students unlock their cars and dorm rooms.

“We also offer unlock services,” Farmer said. “We can get you in and out of those places if you’ve locked your keys in. We also do jump-offs for your vehicles; we will come out and help you change a tire in the event that any of that happens.”

For some parents, the chance to meet with university police can serve as a comforting experience.

“Hearing how the TROY police are working with the county officials, the sheriff’s department, the city, was a good aspect to be aware of that it’s all hands on deck if needed,” said Camille Alderman, a parent of an incoming freshman. “Just listening to him was very comforting this morning and knowing that ‘Hey, my daughter’s in a safe place’.”

Not only did the event shape views about TROY’s campus, it also shaped parents’ view of the city of Troy as a whole.

“I really feel what TROY has to offer in its little sanctuary here on campus and just the surrounding area of the City of Troy is just a truly safe place to be,” Alderman said.

This is the second year that TUPD has met with parents. The department plans to continue this event in the future.
