TROY, Ala. (TROJANVISION) — TROY’s campus recreation center recently turned into a roller skating rink.
Welcome Week hosted its Neon Roller Skating Night to encourage students to be active on campus.
“Welcome Week exists to help incoming freshman and current students transition into the new school year,” said Welcome Week Director Sarah Jane Houston. “We want this place to feel like home for everybody and so we do that with fun and engaging events for students to come and participate in.”
For most students, college is their first time away from home, which can be scary, but Houston says there’s no need to worry.
“When students stay in their dorm room they often times feel lonely and in this case they’re not,” Houston explained. “Here at Troy University we are one big Trojan family and when students participate and become active on campus it makes them feel like they’re apart of that family.”

The Student Government Association (SGA) and University Activities Council (UAC) are currently planning more events for students. There will be more ways to get involved as the semester continues. Organizers said their goal is for TROY to become students’ home away from home.
“We’re so excited to be able to partner with UAC for a lot of events this year and really get the student body excited and engaged with our university,” Houston told TrojanVision.
“You will expect more events with just students being involved on campus,” said UAC Public Relations Coordinator Kamyria Anderson. “A lot of fun stuff, DIY activities, outside stuff, even some weekend trips.”
Student organizations are highlighted during Welcome Week as many groups search for new participants. Troy University offers a multitude of student organizations where students can learn to be leaders both on campus and in communities.
“If you’re ever wondering where you can get plugged in we have a student involvement office in upstairs TC,” Houston said. “I promise you it’s not as scary and intimidating as it seems and you might meet some of your favorite people.”
