Pickleball courts, dog park and disc golf course part of rec center’s future plans

TROY, Ala. (TROJANVISION) — Pickleball courts are set to be built at the Troy Parks and Recreation Center, according Troy Parks and Recreation‘s director.

Although the rec center offers many activities for residents including basketball, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, racquetball and sports leagues, pickleball enthusiasts have struggled to find space to play.

“We’ve addressed a lot of a lot of needs, but there are also a lot of needs that have not been met yet,” Smith explained. “Pickleball is the most popular requested sport of the community whether that be university students or general public.”

Currently the rec center offers up to three pickleball nets that can be placed on the basketball court. However, that results in a smaller playing space for basketball enthusiasts. Plus, with volleyball season on the way, space is expected to become even more limited.

“We just began volleyball practices this week and then we’re run into volleyball season and then run into basketball season,” Dan said. “Pickleball players, unfortunately, did not have a place sometimes so we are hoping, in the near future, we’re going to see a master plan of sorts come together for the city of Troy that will have pickleball courts outdoors.”

According to Smith, plans are now underway to build nine to 12 outdoor pickleball courts. The courts are expected to be located in the empty piece of land next to the rec center playground. The rec center has not released a start or completion date.

Smith says the rec center is also working with the city of Troy to build a dog park as well as a disc golf course.
