Troy Public Radio adds popular program to its schedule

TROY, Ala. (TROJANVISION) — Troy Public Radio (TPR) is adding the popular online series “Tiny Desk” by National Public Radio (NPR) to its schedule.

Tiny Desk Concerts began in 2008. Since then it has featured mainstream and indie artists.

“People who sell out large arenas come to play this tiny desk,” said Director of Radio Kyle Gassiott. “We are talking Taylor Swift and Kendrick Lamar, and it’s literally them playing at a desk, somebody’s desk, at NPR’s music division.”

Tiny Desk also offers a chance for new and upcoming artists, such as Chappell Roan and Doechii, to get more exposure. However, new artists aren’t the only ones hoping to reach a bigger audience.

“Students around here are familiar with Tiny Desk, so it’s another opportunity for people to tune in here and listen to something from the station,” explained Gassiott.

Previously, the series could only be watched on YouTube and as a podcast on the NPR website. After this weekend, it will be able to reach millions of listeners over the air.

“It will air on Friday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 6 p.m. We got our broadcast signals 89.9 for Montgomery and Troy, 88.7 for Dothan, and 91.7 WTJB for Columbus and Phenix City. You can stream us also at troypublicradio.org or tell your smart speakers and smartphone to play Troy public radio,” said Gassiott.

TPR is looking forward to streaming the series, which has over one billion streams, across its airwaves. To watch old episodes of the Tiny Desk, stream the series on YouTube at the NPR Music account.
