New outdoor group aims to connect Troy community via nature

TROY, Ala. (TROJANVISION) — Being in a small town like Troy Alabama, locals sometimes wonder what all there is to do.

That’s why one woman has created a group for those wanting to bond over the outdoors.

Caitlin Hartselle, a Troy local, has been an outdoor lover for most of her life.

“I like being in the outdoors, because personally is brings me a lot of peace,” Hartselle said.

That is why she decided it was time to create the Facebook group Troy Area Outdoors.

“I just kind of wanted to find a group of people that were interested in the outdoors that could come together and form connections over that,” Hartselle said.

Hartselle has high hopes for the group. From learning about nature, taking trips to state parks, and finding all the hidden gems she believes the Wiregrass has to offer.

“I just kind of hope it strengthens community bonds in general like getting to meet new people and knowing each other in our small community here in Troy,” Hartselle said.

Dou Robert and Amanda Kurtz are some of those “new people” and locals in Troy.

“It helps to get us out of our comfort zone,” Amanda said.

“Yeah, open people up, get them comfortable with strangers and developing a relationship that this town just really needs,” Robert said.

The group also aims to improve mental and physical health.

“Especially to come out here to the Arboretum and walk around the pond, it kind of just resets my brain for me. I think that making use of that in the community can definitely be a big benefit,” Hartselle said.

The group isn’t just for adults. Teens and kids are welcome, too.

“I would think even like a youth group fishing would be some involvement for the youth so their not getting in trouble,” Robert said.

Hartselle hopes to host more activities that get locals involved. Future ideas range from exploring walking trails to trips to state parks.

Troy locals wanting to get involved can find more information on Facebook at Troy Area Outdoors.
