TROY, Ala. (TROJANVISION) — Have you ever wondered what it takes to be a drum major? Or to hone your skills in color guard?
Every year, high school students learn those things at Troy University’s Leadership Band Camp.
“Even if you come to the camp as someone who has more knowledge than others, it’s not just a camp for fun,” said Codie Pawloski, a Enterprise High school Student attending the band camp. “It’s a camp to help other people grow along side of you.”

After days of preparation, students showcased everything they learned. Some where even recognized for outstanding talent.
Abigail Tavernier was one of the students recognized for her work throughout the week. She hopes to bring some of her knowledge back to her high school.
“I’ve learned how to be more consistent with my basics and then that will help my girls at home who struggle with their basics become cleaner at them, look more professional on the field,” Tavernier said.
According to assistant drum major Peter Bates, the camp is designed to help students thrive.
“The big purpose of this camp is to give students tools,” Bates explained. “Give them different tools that they can put in their workboxes to take back home, different styles that they can learn, stuff that is going to help them to build their halftime shows.”
The camp doesn’t just help students improve their skills. For high school color guard member Victoria Bordeloa, it is also a chance to make new friends.
“It’s been so nice to meet all these girls,” Bordeloa said. “I think I have definitely gained a lot more more friendships here, and I hope those will last longer.
“It’s just been so amazing.”
Students interested in building their skills and making new friendships can be on the lookout for next summer’s leadership band camp. Dates for next summer’s music and leadership camp will be finalized in the spring. For more information about band-related camps, visit the Sound of the South Band Program on Facebook.
