Section of road along George Wallace Drive causes concern for drivers

TROY, Ala. (TROJANVISION) — A high-traffic area is causing concern for local drivers.

George Wallace Drive on the stretch of Highway 231 is one of Troy’s busiest corridors. For drivers trying to leave businesses, making a left turn can be a dangerous decision.

“I was just going to get some food, and I was turning out of the area, and as I was taking the left turn, there was a big truck in the far left lane blocking my view,” said Troy University student Sandra Hall. “I thought I had had it clear, but when I pulled forward, someone was actually coming my way and they hit me.

“They [insurance] did put me at fault just simply because the other car also couldn’t see me, and because they technically had the right of way, but even the cops said that spot’s not good, that many wrecks happened there, and at this point they should put a no left turn sign.”

Stories like this are becoming increasingly common with drivers pointing to blocked sight lines and heavy traffic as major concerns when exiting the area. However, there is debate over who is responsible for making the area safer.

“It’s just a matter of common sense of the drivers,” said Troy resident Jim English. “Even if even the drivers coming from that direction turning in, there may be cars coming from this lane that you can’t see.

“If you can’t see clearly for a little bit of a distance, it’s just not smart to pull out.”

Whether the solution is better signage, roadway changes, or something else entirely, many drivers agree the area deserves a closer look. TrojanVision has reached out to the Troy Police Department and plans to reach out to the Alabama Department of Transportation to see if changes to this area are being considered.
