TROY Ala. (TROJANVISION) — Some college-aged voters may be one step closer to exercising their right to vote this election season after a recent town hall Tuesday night brought two major political figures to campus.

Troy University students and Pike County residents gathered in Trojan Center Ballrooms and asked questions to U.S. Congressman Shomari Figures and the Democratic gubernatorial candidate Doug Jones. Some students said after the town hall that their decision has been made for the November election

“To see them in person and then to see their thoughts and stances that they were giving, that was really the final nail in the coffin,” said freshman Demondre Dubose. “I already know who I’m voting for this November, and I’m proud of who I’m voting for this November.”

Both Jones and Figures have been speaking with voters across the state as they prepare for the November election. Both noted the importance of speaking to college-aged voters.

“The younger generation of voters is going to be extremely important to this,” said governor candidate Doug Jones. “From our standpoint, it’s why I’m doing this. It is the future of Alabama that’s at stake here, and that’s the younger generation of voters.”

“They have a lot of questions, a lot of curiosity, and it’s our responsibility as people who represent them and people who are asking to continue to represent them to be able to give them that forum,” said District Two Representative Shomari Figures.

Give them that forum, they did. Younger voters crowded into the Trojan Center ballroom to ask their questions and share their thoughts.

“What I’m really most happy about is the student turnout,” said Nathaniel Bliss, president of Troy’s College Democrats. “I asked students to raise their hand if they were here, and you saw half the room shoot their hands up; that was absolutely incredible to see. It makes me really excited about just the next generation going forward.”

The general election is still a couple of months away, with election day on November 3rd. Before election day, the College Democrats will host another town hall with Senate candidate Everett Wess on August 31st at 6 p.m. in Patterson 201.
