Troy community provides support during Child Abuse Prevention Month

TROY, Ala. (TROJANVISION) — The Troy Resilience Project is working to provide extra support and education during National Child Abuse Prevention Month.

Over 26,000 cases of child mistreatment are reported in Alabama annually, according to the 2025 Alabama Kids Count Databook. It’s the real people behind those numbers that are spurring the Troy Resilience Project to shine light on the less-recognized abusive environments.

Although some people may consider child abuse as physical or sexual violence, according to TRP’s Executive Director Maggie Doss, it’s much deeper than that.

“Maybe [they’re] a parent who doesn’t have all of the means necessary to work a job where they might have to leave their children home alone,” Doss said. “They might struggle to have the knowledge on how to parent their child properly or they don’t have a way to get their child to the doctor, and things like that.

“Here at TRP, we work to prevent those things by trying to make sure families have all the resources they need.”

Although these things may not be intentional, they fall under the category of child neglect. TRP tries to prevent those situations by providing basic necessity resources (food, clothing, hygiene products, etc.) through their care closet, home visit services, school-based mental health help, trauma-informed counseling, and worksforce development.

It’s important to note that you don’t have to be a social worker like the people at TRP to help. People from all walks of life can and are encouraged to help, as these services benefit the entire community, not just the families directly affected.

“It’s a real, tangible way to be invested in the community in making a difference in the lives of kids and families,” Doss said. “It’s community focused investment and it’s making our community a better place.”

Although child abuse prevention month is coming to an end, TRP’s doors are open year-round and any time is the perfect time to help out. You can find TRP at 100 S Market Street in Downtown Troy.
