TROY, Ala. (TROJANVISION) — If you were downtown on Wednesday, you might have caught the sisters of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, and the brothers of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated, working together.
Members from both chapters spent a few hours picking up litter and helping clear off the sidewalks.
“It was important for the Rho Delta Delta chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated, and the Mu Alpha chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, to come together for this cleanup, show that Greek unity is important and it is alive, and you don’t have to do things with one organization; you can do it with everybody,” said John Ramos, a junior.
Senior Anthony Toby noted the broader impact on the area.

“Serving the Troy community means bringing all the D9 together as one for one, and then as a Troy campus and Troy student body, we should all be proud to take care of the curb appeal of our communities, our apartment complexes, the schools,” Toby said. “We should be trying to inspire the youth to be better than what we are.”
Between classes, studying, and student organization meetings, finding time to give back can be tough, but members say seeing student groups step up helps make a difference throughout the community.
“What I would say to other students that want to get involved in serving the Troy community is just put that first foot forward into stepping into service,” said junior Jazmyne Jones. “There are many organizations here on Troy’s campus that you can get involved in to meet new people, new service opportunities, and just make Troy a better place overall.”
Senior Giavanni Fuller hopes the joint effort leaves a lasting impression.
“I just hope that this cleanup inspires people to continue to get their hands dirty,” Fuller said. “I know that in today’s society, it’s kind of hard to want to go out there and get in the dirt, especially at our age.
“I’m just hoping that people can just think about the importance of just keeping our earth clean and keeping our earth healthy because we all love the earth.”
