TROY, Ala. (TROJANVISION) — Philanthropy weeks are back at Troy University, bringing Greek organizations together to raise money and support causes that are important to their chapters.

For Alpha Gamma Delta, philanthropy means fighting hunger. Each fall, the sorority hosts Fall Fest, an annual dance competition that brings fraternities and sororities together for a night of competition, entertainment, and fundraising.

“We’re hosting an event called Fall Fest that we host every fall semester. It’s our philanthropy event, and our philanthropy is fighting hunger,” said Coryn Kendrick, chapter president of Alpha Gamma Delta. “We have this as a fundraiser to raise money to fight hunger locally here in Pike County.

“It’s a dance competition between all the fraternities and sororities.”

The event gives students a chance to support Alpha Gamma Delta while also taking part in a larger effort to give back to the community. Fraternities and sororities compete through dance, while students from across campus attend and help raise money for the cause. Bella Evans, a member of Alpha Delta Pi, said the turnout showed how willing students are to support organizations and their philanthropic efforts.

“I think the best thing about philanthropy is the amount of people that actually show up for the great cause,” Evans said. “Today we had a really, really big turnout, which raised a lot of money for them, which we’re really grateful for.

“It’s not just raising money for our own philanthropy, but we’re helping other organizations raise money to help theirs as well.”

For other students, Fall Fest is about more than the competition. Events like this allow Greek organizations to support one another while bringing attention to the different causes they serve. Tucker Watkins of Sigma Alpha Epsilon said working together can create an impact beyond the university.

“It can give a positive outlook for the whole campus,” Watkins said. “We are supporting kids in need in the hospital. Alpha Gam is feeding the hungry.

“When we all work together, we can make a positive impact not just on campus, but in the state and in the country.”

As philanthropy events continue throughout the semester, Troy’s Greek organizations will have more opportunities to work together and give back to their communities. For Alpha Gamma Delta, Fall Fest is one way the chapter continues its mission to fight hunger and support those in need in Pike County.
