What to know about this year’s Canless Castle Contest

TROY, Ala. (TROJANVISION) — The Office of Civic Engagement is just weeks away from this year’s Canless Castle Contest—an initiative that works to fight child hunger in Pike County.

The annual competition is a joint event between the Office of Civic Engagement and Student Involvement that sees student groups donate non-perishable foods that will be given to TROY’s Backpack for Kids program.

According to the Office of Civic Engagement’s website, 20%* of Pike County children are food insecure, which means they lack access to food that supports an active and healthy lifestyle.

Although the competition once accepted canned goods, the Backpack for Kids program is now well-stocked and is in need of other foods such as:

  • Fruit – fruit cups and applesauce
  • Main Course – microwavable ravioli and mac-n-cheese
  • Breakfast – oatmeal or grits packets and breakfast bars
  • Snack – peanut butter crackers, animal crackers, goldfish, granola bar

Students do not have to be in an official student group to participate in the contest. Friend groups are welcome to register. The deadline to register is Friday, March 29.

The competition is scheduled for Wednesday, April 3 from 2-4 p.m. at Tailgate Terrace (in case of inclement weather, an alternate location will be announced). A timeline for the competition can be found on the contest’s registration page.

Basketball season is right around the corner, but before the women's basketball team tips off its season, the Trojans welcomed fans into Trojan Arena for a night of fun. Jimmy Nichols has the story.

And that game will be an exhibition on October 27th in Trojan Arena against Tuskegee.
In about two months the Sound of the South will lead the London New Years Day Parade. Savannah Edgar learned how they earned the money to get across the pond.

Viewers can watch the parade on local PBS stations on New Years Day.
Sound of the South members aren't the only ones fundraising.

As Jordan Bray shows us, a casual game of basketball recently turned into a philanthropic event.
Pi Kappa Phi's chapter at Troy University has been suspended following an investigation into hazing violations.

Trojanvision's Avery Lewis has the latest on the university's decision and what comes next.

Pi Kappi Phi is Troy's longest standing fraternity on campus after being founded in 1964. The suspension ends the chapters operations on campus.

Members are required to vacate the fraternity house by October 26th. Within the last hour we also received information that the student was transported to Troy Regional Medical Center for treatment and was released the next day.

This remains an ongoing story, and we will provide updates as more information becomes available.Pi Kappa Phi's chapter at Troy University has been suspended following an investigation into hazing violations.
