TROY, Ala. (TROJANVISION) — TROY’s Office of Civic Engagement hosted its annual Can Castle Contest on the Tailgate Plaza.

For the 13th year in a row, the Office of Civic Engagement challenged students to fight hunger in Pike County, one castle at a time.

“We use this as a way to get students engaged in issues in our community” said Lauren Cochran, of the Office of Civic Engagement. “The food insecurity rate in Pike County is 20% and often food insecurity impacts youth in the community more than any other demographic.”

This year’s contest saw seven teams raise nearly 6,000 donated items.

Awards were given to three groups:

  • Best Castle Design: Newman Ministry
  • Best Castle Design in the Greek Division: Alpha Gama Delta
  • Most Items Collected: Chi Omega

Items that were donated during the Can Castle Contest will be used to supply the Office of Civic Engagement’s Backpack for Kids program.
