TROY, Ala. (TROJANVISION) — Troy University welcomed students to Camp Success.
Camp Success, a program ran by the Alabama Department of Rehabilitation Services (ADRS), has made its way back to TROY’s campus. The partnership dates back nearly a decade.
“It’s probably been about nine or ten years,” said State Coordinator of Deaf/HH Services Ben Hollingsworth. “We’ve been happy here at the Alabama Department of Rehabilitation Services to partner with Troy and we look forward to doing it every year.”

Some first-year students have a hard time adjusting to college. Students who are hearing-impaired may have an even harder time; that is where Camp Success steps in to help.
“The objective of the camp is to show deaf and heard of hearing students the experience of living on a college campus,” Hollingsworth said. “We want to encourage them to do better to understand what they need to prepare for in the first year of college.”
The goal of the camp is to show campers what college life could be like for them.
“A real world experience,” Hollingsworth added. “We give them opportunities to experience living in a dorm, experience going into the class room, learning about possible accommodations they might need like using an interpreter or using cart services.”
Hollingsworth also had some tips for hearing students on how to make hearing-impaired students feel more comfortable on campus.
“Treat students with hearing loss the same as any other student; when you talk with them look them in the eye, if they have hearing loss or they’re hard of hearing you may have to speak up, speak clearly.”
