What students need to know about parking on campus

TROY, Ala. (TROJANVISION) — It may seem like an easy task, but there are some important rules everyone should know before pulling the lever to park on campus.

1. Purchase your parking decal and put it in the correct spot on your car.

To purchase a parking decal, you have to purchase it online here. You will be able to see the prices. Pay attention to the requirements for the pricing because if you have a TROY tag, then you get a discount on your parking decal.

Then, go to the Troy University Police Department (TUPD) to pick up the physical decal. The police department is located at 500 Park St, Troy, AL 36082.

The decal must go on your rearview window on the driver’s side. This is where university police officers will be looking when patrolling areas to make sure the correct people are parking in the correct lots.

Campus visitors are also required to have a temporary parking pass. Those can be purchased online and picked up at the University’s Police Department.

Make sure your decal is up to date. You will get a ticket if you have an expired parking decal.

2. Learn where your designated parking lots are on campus.

There are faculty-only parking lots on campus. There are also parking lots where only visitors can park. This is very important for students because you can get ticketed for parking in areas that are not for students. Depending on where you park and what kind of offense it is, you could also get booted.

3. Do not back into parking spaces.

This is very important for students, faculty and visitors. As mentioned before, University police officers patrol areas to make sure the correct people are parking in the correct areas. In order for them to check cars efficiently, people need to park their cars where their parking decals are easy to see.

You will get ticketed for backing into a parking space.

4. Do not park in handicap spots if you, the driver, are not handicap.

To park in a handicap spot, the driver needs to have a correct and updated decal hung in their car. If you are parked in a handicap spot without the correct decal, you will get ticketed.

5. Got a ticket? Here’s what you do to sort it out.

Sometimes, it happens. You get a ticket. No worries!

You can pay your ticket here. You can also appeal your ticket if you feel you were given a ticket for the wrong reason. It is important to note that you can not graduate until you have paid off all your parking tickets, if you have any.

Another way to pay off those parking tickets is waiting for the University’s Police Department to hold its Ticket Amnesty Day. Towards the end of every semester, the department will have a day where students can bring in canned goods, non-perishables, and hygiene products in replacement of paying for their parking tickets.

TrojanVision will keep you updated when the department announces the date of its Ticket Amnesty Day.

Parking on campus can be stressful, especially when you’re late for class. It’s important to remember to park where it’s appropriate.

According to Chief George Beaudry, if anyone is parking anywhere on campus you have to have a parking decal. If you do not, then you will get ticketed.

One spot most students may not think to park is the soccer field parking lot. Beaudry says it’s nearly empty on most days, so it may be a good idea to park there if you can’t find a space in a desired parking lot.

You can contact the University’s Police Department during its open hours. You can find the contact information on the university’s website.

Stay safe and park correctly, Trojans!
