Nostalgia Dance combines Jazzy music and moves

TROY, Ala. (TROJANVISION) — A Troy University ensemble transported guests from the 2020’s to the 1920’s through music and dance.

From swing steps to smooth spins, Troy University’s Jazz Ensemble turned back the clock for its annual Nostalgia Dance.

Tuesday, students filled the floor of the studio in downtown Troy, dressed for the era and ready to move. Before anyone could channel their inner Gatsby, a dance instructor stepped in to teach the basics, proving you don’t need to be a pro to own the dance floor.

“Just to let loose, have fun,” dance instructor Sarah Jane Patterson. “Don’t care what anybody else thinks. Just dance to dance.”

From big band hits to smooth jazz classics, the ensemble performed pieces spanning multiple eras. Each song brought its own personality to the night. Guest vocalists also joined the group, adding even more energy to an already lively evening.

“I think it’s wonderful,” Patterson said. “I like love things like this. I love jazz music. I’ve always loved jazz music and I love to dance, obviously, and so I really think that this is a great idea.”

The event, although groovy, was not just about dancing. It was also about spotlighting the talent behind the sound.

“I think events like this call more attention to ensembles that only usually really get their little concerts throughout the year,” guest singer Autumn Griffin said. “I feel like this is more of an opportunity for everyone to come out and enjoy it beyond just like sitting in a chair and listening.

“It gives everyone to like a chance to be a part of it.”

The Jazz Ensemble was under the direction of Jazz Studies and Professor of Music Dr. Dave Camwell.
