Dr. Avington Medeiros, a lecturer of history at Troy University, has been awarded the Dr. Robert Kruckeberg Faculty Excellence Award, presented by the University’s Faculty Senate.
The award honors the memory of Dr. Robert Kruckeberg, an Associate Professor of History who passed away in December 2020 at the age of 43 after a courageous battle with cancer. Kruckerberg had been a member of the TROY faculty since 2012.
Medeiros received the award, which is presented to an outstanding lecturer or adjunct faculty member who demonstrates excellence in the areas of teaching, research and service, from Faculty Senate President Dr. Lenetra Jefferson, along Dr. Jack Hawkins, Jr., Chancellor, and Dr. Kerry Palmer, Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Provost, during the annual Honors Convocation on the Troy Campus on April 15.
“Receiving the Rob Kruckeberg Faculty Excellence Award is a meaningful honor, both professionally and personally. Rob was a respected colleague in the History Department, and also a dear friend,” Medeiros said. “To be recognized with an award bearing his name is especially significant, as it reflects the values he embodied as an educator. I am deeply grateful for this recognition and proud to carry forward his legacy of commitment to teaching and service.”
Medeiros is a two-time TROY graduate, receiving her bachelor’s in history and her master’s in post-secondary history education. She received her Master of Education degree in secondary history education from Faulkner University and her Doctor of Education degree in rural education from the University of West Alabama.
Medeiros’ areas for research include rural education, teacher preparation, and History and Social Studies education. Her dissertation, “Rural Teacher Preparation in the State of Alabama,” examined the intentional efforts of teacher preparation programs to prepare teachers to teach in rural settings.
Medeiros is the content advisor for both History and Social Science Education students as well as the university supervisor for History and Social Science Education Interns.
