More than 20 aspiring entrepreneurs from across the region are spending the week at Troy University’s IDEA Bank learning what it takes to turn an idea into a successful business through the “Just Start” Youth Entrepreneurship Academy.
The hands-on academy, which began this week, is designed for students in grades 6-12 and recent high school graduates. Throughout the program, participants will develop business concepts while exploring entrepreneurship fundamentals, including idea development, branding, marketing, pricing strategies and customer engagement.
The opening session challenged students to think like entrepreneurs by identifying problems businesses may encounter and developing strategies to overcome them. Participants arrived with a wide range of business concepts, from ideas in the earliest stages of development to ventures already underway.
Lynne George, director of the IDEA Bank, said the academy is designed to give young entrepreneurs practical skills and the confidence to pursue their ideas.
“The Just Start Youth Entrepreneurship Academy gives students an opportunity to discover that entrepreneurship is about more than having a good idea,” George said. “It’s about learning how to solve problems, communicate your vision and build the skills needed to turn that idea into reality. We want every participant to leave believing they have what it takes to create something meaningful.”
Throughout the week, students will work with mentors and participate in interactive activities aimed at refining their business concepts while strengthening leadership, communication and critical-thinking skills.
A major focus of the academy is preparing participants to confidently present their ideas. Students will develop public speaking and presentation skills before delivering business pitches to a panel of judges during the academy’s culminating event.
George said the experience mirrors the entrepreneurial process by encouraging students to test ideas, receive feedback and continue improving.
“One of the most valuable lessons students learn is that every entrepreneur starts somewhere,” she said. “Whether they came with a business that’s already operating or simply an idea in a notebook, this academy helps them take the next step and connect with other young people who share their passion for innovation.”
The IDEA Bank serves as Troy University’s hub for entrepreneurship and innovation, providing students, community members and aspiring business owners with resources, mentorship and educational opportunities that support new business creation and entrepreneurial growth.
The “Just Start” Youth Entrepreneurship Academy reflects the IDEA Bank’s mission of inspiring the next generation of entrepreneurs by equipping young innovators with the knowledge, confidence and experience needed to transform ideas into successful ventures.
