For the first time, Troy University has been listed among U.S. News & World Report’s top national public universities in its 2027 rankings released on Tuesday.

TROY has consistently been ranked among the publication’s top regional institutions, but due to recent advancements, the 2027 rankings marked the first time university had been included among the top national university rankings.

The 2027 edition of the U.S. News Best Colleges rankings evaluated more than 1,700 U.S. college and universities, using up to 17 factors to measure academic quality and graduate success.

TROY ranked as the 200^th Top Public University in the nation and ranked 278^th in Top Performers in Social Mobility in its first year in the larger, more competitive classification. TROY also was recognized for its Business (301^st), Computer Science (396^th) and Nursing programs (288^th).

These rankings are a testament to the dedication and hard work of our faculty and staff and their commitment to student success and academic excellence.”

In 2023, the Alabama Commission on Higher Education approved an instructional role change for TROY, allowing the university to offer additional doctoral degrees and helping to pave the way for the continued maturation as a research institution. In addition, TROY was designated as a Carnegie Research University and recognized as a Doctoral University in Carnegie Classifications in 2025. TROY also has advanced to the highest level of degree classification by The Commission on Colleges and Universities, formerly the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.

U.S. News publishes the Best Colleges rankings each year to provide prospective students and their families with comparative merits of the undergraduate programs at America’s colleges and universities.

The U.S. News and World Report rankings were the latest accolades received by the University. In August, TROY was recognized among the Best in the South by The Princeton Review for the 22^nd consecutive year. Also, earlier this year, TROY’s graphic design program was ranked third in Niche’s “Best Colleges with Online Graphic Design Degree Programs.”
