Troy University students to build castles to fight hunger

News | March 29, 2018

Students participate in the 2017 Can Castle Contest at Troy University. This year's event is set for noon on Monday.

Student organizations at Troy University will take a stand against hunger in the community on Monday, as the University’s Office of Civic Engagement presents the eighth annual Campus Kitchens Castle Contest on the Troy Campus.

Organizations will collect canned goods, as well as items that can be used in the University’s Backpacks for Kids programs, and utilize those items in building castles on the patio outside of the Barnes & Noble Bookstore. Groups will begin work on their castles at 12:15 p.m. and have 30 minutes to complete them. Winners will be selected in the categories of Best Overall Castle, Most Items Collected, Outstanding Greek Organization and Outstanding Student Organizations.

“In years past, donations have been comprised of canned food items for the Campus Kitchens Project. This year, however, our greatest need is for our Backpacks for Kids program,” said Dr. Avery Livingston, coordinator of civic engagement. “Our goal is to pack 1,000 backpacks from donations through the contest. Each backpack includes one main course item, two breakfast items, two snacks and two fruit items.”

For additional information, contact Livingston at 334-808-6349 or by email at livingstona@troy.edu.
