Registration is ongoing for the annual Civic Heroes summer camp, offered by Troy University’s Office of Civic Engagement.
The camp is designed for rising fourth-through-sixth-grade students who have a knack for serving their neighbors, learning how to tackle community challenges or who are simply looking for fun activities this summer.
“Civic Heroes is all about inspiring kids to see that they can make a difference—right now, right where they are,” said Lauren Cochran, Coordinator of Civic Engagement. “Throughout the week, we combine hands-on activities, games and real life lessons to help campers discover what it means to be a good citizen. It’s amazing to watch them light up as they learn they have the power to lead, serve and build stronger communities!”
During the week of July 14-18 from 8 a.m. to noon, campers will be introduced to the five character traits of a good citizen: compassion, honesty, respect, responsibility and courage. They will also dive into the basics of our government, including learning about the Constitution, governing branches, American symbols, citizen rights and responsibilities and the election process.
Additionally, campers will have the opportunity to meet with community heroes from the area and even design their very own communities.
Guardians can register their campers at www.troy.edu/civicheroes no later than June 13.
