Troy University alumna Deborah Stringfellow has spent her year as Alabama’s 2024-2025 Teacher of the Year traveling the state, speaking to schools and colleges about the positive work happening in Alabama classrooms. She’s focused on encouraging educators to reconnect with their purpose and reminding them why teaching is one of the most rewarding careers.
With more than 40 years of experience shaping young minds, her remarkable career is a testament to her dedication and passion for education. As Alabama Teacher of the Year, Stringfellow embraced opportunities to advocate for educators across the state and encourage the next generation of teachers.
As a proud alumna of Troy University, Stringfellow has consistently championed a love of learning while inspiring her students, colleagues and future educators alike. Reflecting on her time at Troy University, where she earned both her Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education and Master of Science in Special Education, Stringfellow shared valuable advice for aspiring teachers entering the profession.
“It’s the best job in the world,” she said. “Each day in the classroom, you make an impression—let it be a positive one.”
Throughout her career, Stringfellow’s teaching philosophy has focused on fostering independence and a love of learning among her students. By creating a classroom environment rooted in respect, responsibility and responsiveness, she prepares her students for the road ahead. Her commitment to inspiring growth and confidence has remained at the heart of her approach.
Her initiative, Sowing Seeds: Growing Teachers, reflects her dedication to mentoring and empowering teachers at all stages of their careers. She reminded educators of the importance of self-care and maintaining perspective during challenges.
“Save every piece of encouragement you receive,” she advised. “It will remind you of your successes and the reason you started teaching in the first place.”
Above all, she reminds educators to focus on the joy and fulfillment teaching brings.
“It’s a legacy you leave behind. Teaching shapes the future, and there is nothing more rewarding than that,” she added.
Deborah Stringfellow’s year as Alabama Teacher of the Year has been a celebration of the teaching profession and a testament to the lasting impact educators have on their students and communities.
Dr. Joseph Johnson, the department chair for the Teacher Education program, offered his congratulations to Stringfellow for this prestigious honor.
“She represents all the outstanding qualities of the teachers TROY has been proud to produce since its founding in 1887,” he said.
