Kristen Shipman, Financial Aid Assistant at Troy University, has been awarded the University’s Vergil Parks McKinley Award.

Shipmman was presented with the award by Dr. Jack Hawkins, Jr., Chancellor, during a ceremony on Thursday and was nominated by Alicia Bookout, Interim Vice Chancellor for Development and Alumni Affairs who previously served as Associate Vice Chancellor for Financial Aid.

The McKinley Award is the highest honor that Troy University gives to a non-faculty staff member. It is presented quarterly to an employee who has demonstrated outstanding attitude, innovation and work ethic. The award was established by the late John McKinley, former Texaco CEO, in honor of his father, Vergil Parks McKinley, who was a Troy University professor during the early 20th century and was key to the development of the University’s athletic program. Winners of this award receive an engraved clock and a $1,000 stipend.

“Kristen Shipman is an individual who embodies the qualities that make her a deserving recipient of the McKinley Award,” Bookout said in her letter of nomination. “Her daily presence in the office exudes positive energy, benefiting both students and colleagues. She consistently demonstrates kindness and consideration towards each student and parent, going above and beyond to ensure their satisfaction and resolution of any issues.”

Bookout shared a recent note of gratitude Shipman received from a parent who had personally witnessed her compassionate nature.

“The parent expressed her profound appreciation for Kristen’s assistance in securing financial support for her daughter, as well as the positive impact she had on her daughter’s confidence, encouragement, and belief in her ability to achieve greatness. This is merely one instance of Kristen’s nurturing and supportive demeanor. She is a valuable asset to the Financial Aid office and represents the university with grace and dignity.”

Shipman said she was surprised and honored to receive the award.

“I am so very grateful and surprised to receive this award,” she said. “I love being at TROY and love talking and working with all of the students. It is incredibly humbling to be recognized in this way. I am so thankful for the amazing people I have the privilege of working alongside every day.”
