The YellowHammer Film Festival, coming into its fourth season, is adding a new opportunities for students to have their work seen by the masses and judged by industry professionals during the inaugural YellowHammer 48-Hour Film Race.

Launched in 2020 by Associate Professor of Design Chris Stagl, the YellowHammer Film Festival is a free and enriching interactive experience for high school and college students that consists of workshops, a keynote speaker, a student film exhibition and an awards ceremony.

The newest YellowHammer event came to fruition after Stagl and new festival Co-Director Nathan Hobbs sat down to discuss how to keep people’s attention on the festival during the time between the festival’s end and when submissions open the following summer. One idea kept floating to the top: “Let’s just have fun.”

“Last year, Nathan and his peers at Studio 207 formed a team and competed in the Sidewalk 48-Hour Festival, like many of the 48-hour competitions I have been a part of back in Jacksonville,” Stagl said. “In recapping their experience, the overriding feeling was ‘let’s do it again!’”

The YH48HR Film Race will take place remotely on Zoom from March 15-17 with a team registration deadline of March 13. Both student and professional teams are welcome to compete in the event. Teams will be given a character name, prop and line of dialogue to ensure the film meets the weekend’s criteria. Films can only be up to four minutes long.

“It just seemed like a no-brainer to do it in the spring to keep YellowHammer fresh in everyone’s minds before summer,” Hobbs added. “So, we reached out to the folks at Sidewalk Film Festival because we didn’t want to compete against their efforts on the same weekend and we landed on March 15-17 as our weekend.”
