Troy University design students won top honors at this year’s Montgomery and Dothan American Advertising Federation (ADDY) student competitions, including fourteen Silver, eight Golds, two Judges Choice, two Best of Show and the coveted Student Designer of the Year Award in Montgomery.

The American Advertising Awards is the advertising industry’s largest and most representative competition, attracting more than 25,000 entries every year in local AAF Ad Club competitions. The mission of the American Advertising Awards is to recognize and reward the creative spirit of excellence in the art of advertising.

Student Tong Ling was awarded Student Designer of the Year and Best of Show in the Montgomery competition for her emotional childhood book and animation, “Year After Year,” that tells the story of growing up in China without her parents around. Ling is an international student from Changzhou Institute of Technology and was a part of TROY’s 1-2-1 program.

“I am extremely honored to receive this award and lucky to have met such wonderful faculty such as Professor Skaggs, Stagl, and Silvia Li,” she said.

“I think it is vital in the building of future international relationships that we showcase how incredible our 1-2-1 student creative work is,” added Design Professor Chris Stagl. “Not only did Tong win several awards, but Chaeeun Ha from South Korea also was recognized. Their contributions to our overall success as a true international partner cannot be overstated.”

Stagl and student Nathan Hobbs were also awarded two trophies in the Professional Division for their creative work on the YellowHammer Film Festival 3 campaign, bringing home a Silver and a Judges Choice award.

“It’s a great honor to share these professional awards with Nathan as we both put in a lot of time making the festival a reality from a marketing and branding perspective, and I couldn’t have done this without him,” Stagl said. “It is also a significant achievement to have a student winning pro level awards before they even graduate—it speaks very highly of Nate’s work ethic and skill set.”

Hobbs added, “It’s wild to have been awarded two professional ADDYs in Dothan with Professor Stagl and then to win again in Montgomery with our team, Studio 207, who I am actively forming a new media company with right now in Troy. What a great way to transition to the industry.”

Student Grace Kish also won a Best of Show award for her “The View” music video, which is “a tribute to taking care of yourself.”

“Honestly, I didn’t expect to win at all! Still reeling!” she said. “I’m extremely grateful for Professor Stagl for consistently entering student work into competitions and film fests. It’s very rewarding to have your hard work acknowledged, and I am feeling so inspired by the creative work that was recognized at the ADDY’s from Troy’s talented Art and Design students.”
