On Saturday, February 22, TROY hosted the 7th annual Flute Day. About 30 participants, including high school and college students, were on campus for the event.

Dr. Heather Small, Flute Day coordinator and Associate Professor of Flute, shared that the day is an opportunity for musicians to share their love of the instrument with others.

“Flute Day is an important instrument-specific event that appeals to people of all ages and levels of playing,” she said. “Some folks have no access to a music store that specializes in the flute, so they are mesmerized by our instrument vendors. Others attend because they want to learn more about the flute or play music with a group or hear concerts. It’s a day to celebrate all things flute.”

This year’s event featured guest artist Dr. Elizabeth Robinson, an Assistant Professor of Music from South Dakota State University. Robinson led a conversation about the commissioning process for new music and held a Q&A session and a masterclass. She also performed a closing recital that was assisted by Dr. Ben Crook, TROY’s Assistant Professor of collaborative piano.

The free event featured two vendors, Beethoven and Company from Tallahassee, Fla. and Flute Center of New York. Small also conducted two music scholarship auditions during the event for new students that will start at TROY in the fall.

The next Flute Day is scheduled for February 28, 2026.
