Troy University’s Rosa Parks Museum will host a screening of the documentary “The Rebellious Life of Mrs. Rosa Parks,” followed by a conversation with author Dr. Jeanne Theoharis at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 24.
The event, sponsored by the Alabama Humanities Alliance, is free and open to the public and will feature insightful discussion examining Mrs. Parks’ lifetime of activism not just her arrest and the resulting Montgomery Bus Boycott. A limited number of books will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Light refreshments will be available following the event.
“Rosa Parks’ story is far more expansive than many people realize. She was a lifelong activist, a committed strategist, and a woman whose courage and convictions extended far beyond Montgomery and the Bus Boycott,” said Donna Beisel, the museum’s Director of Operations. “Through the screening of The Rebellious Life of Mrs. Rosa Parks and conversation with Dr. Jeanne Theoharis, the Rosa Parks Museum invites those in attendance to look beyond the familiar narrative and engage more deeply with Mrs. Parks’ life, her activism, and her enduring commitment to justice.”
Released in 2022, the documentary film was directed by Johanna Hamilton and Yoruba Richen and executive produced by Soledad O’Brien, based on the biography written by Dr. Theoharis. The documentary was awarded a Peabody Award and a Television Academy Honor Award.
Theoharis is the author or co-author of 13 books on the civil rights and Black Power movements and the contemporary politics of race in the United States. “The Rebellious Life” biography, a New York Times best seller, won a 2014 NAACP Image Award and the Letitia Woods Brown Award from the Association of Black Women Historians.
Theoharis’ work has appeared in the New York Times, the Washington Post, The Nation, The Atlantic, and the Chronicle of Higher Education. She holds an A.B. in Afro-American Studies from Harvard and a Ph.D. in American Studies from the University of Michigan.
Theoharis is a Distinguished Professor of Political Science at Brooklyn College of City University of New York.
