Alpha Gamma Delta members surveyed a structure consisting of more than 400 canned food items arranged to resemble the circus backdrop of “The Greatest Showman.”

“Some members felt called to bring extra items,” said Jenna Odem, a broadcast journalism major from Fairhope, Ala., and a member of the sorority.

That organization was just one of several that participated in the annual Campus Kitchens Castle Contest on the Troy Campus Monday morning.

The Greek organizations provided canned goods and other food items, competing to build the most creative structure with the items, which the University’s Campus Kitchens and Backpacks for Kids programs will use.

“It’s a fun time, because you get to interact with other organizations you usually don’t interact with,” said FarmHouse member Aaron Dixon, a broadcast journalism major from Birmingham. “And anything that has to do with giving back to the community, we’re game for it.”

Oden called the contest her favorite part of Greek Week.

“Everyone in our organization wanted to support this,” she said. “We really get hands-on with it. Our philanthropy is Feeding America, so it really hits home with us. This community in particular really leans on the Greek community when it comes to events like this.”

That spirit of giving is the common thread that unites the participating organizations.

“I think it’s incredibly important for us to give back to our community,” said Alpha Omicron Pi’s Christina Laplante, an exercise science major from Mexico Beach, Fla.

This year’s Castle Contest collected 6,554 items.
